A soul crushing experience: my appointment with the Federal Employment Agency …

// August 5th, 2009 // Alltag, Arbeit, Deutsche halt

… and one of their recruitment agents.

The whole monstrous Federal Employment Agency empire has been split down into several branches, dividing responsibility and work and after having been there a few times and assuming I am of moderate intelligence, I still can’t figure out which branch is responsible for for what. What I do know is every time I am there sitting in front of someone, me having put on my smiliest smile, tells me: “Well, that’s not my responsibility, I am xxx, you have to go xxx.” Great. When I am at xxx they tell me: “Well, technically I am not responsible for that, you have to go to xxx.”

I only can assume doing this splitting down and cutting responsibilities is supposed to streamline the whole thing.

I find it soul crushing and I can’t see the increase in efficiency at all or whatsoever.

First of all, no one was really able to help me: you get forms you are supposed to fill in, or not, but if not, we come by and cut off one of your arms - choose!

They can’t really tell me anything jobhunting-wise I don’t know yet and they are not really great at pep talk either.

I am on the job hunt and I am actively doing everything possible to find one but those visits at the Federal Employment Agency are just not good for soul and spirit.

They might be of some use for someone who thinks Scooter is the greatest band Germany has and dying your hair a blinding blond is chic - everyone else might actually be more successful on their own!

I came out there yesterday thoroughly depressed: I am not even getting any dole or JSA money … but you still have to do that and this, taking up time I could use for job hunting, networking and what not …or having a coffee in between.

I am always polite and smiley and show that I am actively hunting, listening and just horribly co-operative but yesterday’s woman’s heart couldn’t be opened, after all the form talk and how busy she is and what my duties are and what not I left, forced myself to a last goodby smile, hoping I find a job before I have to go there again and watch a federal recruitment agency touch-type with two fingers and if this is even possible going out there knowing less than before.

For fairness sake I have to say previous encounters with them involved nicer and more polite staff but a complete waste of time was had by me nonetheless.
